Producer’s Notes Producing Scapino has been a challenging yet rewarding experience. It’s been a privilege working with Jim and I’d like to thank him for all his help and for having the confidence that I could handle this job. I would also like to thank Gil Savage for his support and mentoring. This has truly been a team effort. Without our wonderful volunteers we would not have the fabulous set you see tonight. Scapino is a hilariously funny play. I hope everyone enjoys Scapino as much as I do. About the Producers | Scapino is Barbara’s first production. Barbara is new to Scripps Ranch Theatre, becoming a SRT volunteer last summer. She previously helped with set construction for Maternal Spirits and Greetings. Barbara has always enjoyed attending the theater and has found volunteering for Scripps Ranch Theatre a very rewarding experience. | | Lia Metz is excited to work with Jim and Barbara on this production. She has been stage manager on previous Scripps Ranch Theatre productions. Other technical credits include: Assistant Stage Manager/Crew (Dimensions in Dance), Assistant Director/ Set Design (Eagle Theatre), Assistant Choreographer (Alpine Players), and Dance Captain (several productions). Prior to moving to San Diego, Lia graduated from the Pacific Conservatory for the Performing Arts (2002). Lia is best known in San Diego as a performer at theatres such as Starlight, La Jolla Stage Company, The Fritz Theatre, and others. She is thrilled to add another notch to her theatrical belt, and hopes you enjoy the show. |
Director’s Notes Moliere wrote this play in 1670. He shared a theater with an Italian troupe who practiced commedia delle arte, a form of comedy based on stock characters adhering to traditional plot lines but improvising the action and dialogue. I have read that Moliere, observing that the Italians were selling more seats than he, decided to join them at their game. Many of those Commedia characters can be found in this play. The plot line is also very similar to Commedia standards. The Commedia style requires a very broad type of humor and audience involvement as you are about to find out. Moliere set this play in Naples. So, why are we in Venice? The Naples setting requires the Bay of Naples to be situated in the forestage. Our theatre in the half-round does not lend itself to such extravagance. But we can afford a canal. The canal led to a bridge. The bridge led to a mural painted by Sabato Fiorelli. What a beautiful name! Our inspiration for the colors is the Isle of Burano in the Venetian Lagoon and Sabato’s creative spirit. The words to the opening song are taken from an assortment of menus from Italian restaurants. The last song at the end of the play may sound familiar to some of you. The tune is from a Sicilian folk song (Cella luna metza mada) that was sung at Connies’s wedding in Godfather I. Thank you for supporting SRT and this production. This has been a labor of love. We hope you have as much fun as we will tonight. James Caputo
