Scripps Ranch Theatre Presents

"Not Now, Darling"

A Hilarious British Farce, May 29-June 26

Scripps Ranch Theatre will present the hilarious British farce, “Not Now, Darling” May 29 – June 26 at its theater on the Alliant International University campus.  Written by Ray Cooney and John Chapman, the play ran for years in London and was first presented in New York in 1970.

This uproarious farce set box office records in London, Paris and New York and has proved to be a huge hit with regional audiences throughout the United States.

Directed by Jim Caputo and produced by Fran Palmer, “Not Now Darling” features a highly talented cast that includes Mark Loveless, Eric Poppick, DeNae Steele, Danielle DeCarlo, Jill Drexler, Don Pugh, Kathryn Herbruck, Dave Rethoret, Michelle Burkhart, Sunny Smith and Bobby Schiefer.

The plot: As the play opens in the exclusive London fur salon of Bodley and Crouch, Arnold Crouch (the well meaning, innocent partner) is trying to keep things on an even keel despite the energetic philandering of his partner, Gilbert Bodley. Bodley is trying to secure the affection of his latest would-be mistress, Janie McMichael, by selling her husband an expensive mink fur coat for a fraction of its real worth, and the stammering Crouch is saddled with the task of consummating the sale with a straight face. Harry McMichael, her husband, sees an opportunity to obtain the bargain coat for his own mistress. The easily befuddled Crouch is caught in the middle with uproarious complications. Suspicious wives, mistaken identities, scantily clad girls clapped hurriedly into closets, and a continuous barrage of rapid-fire jokes all become part of the hilarious doings. Meanwhile, the play bubbles along merrily right up to the final curtain.

Critics were lavish in their praise of the show. “What does a sophisticated audience do about this assault on its culture? It rolls in the aisles.” – Variety. “A new and nubile farce.” – The New York Daily News. “An evening of non-stop laughter,” The London Sunday Express.

Jill Drexler, SRT artistic director and a cast member, said “This is one of the funniest shows you’ll see all season. We are delighted to bring this show to Scripps Ranch Theatre. But we have one word of caution: it’s an adult show; it is not for the children.”

Performances are on Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Scripps Ranch Theatre encourages patrons to make reservations early as performances sell out quickly. Tickets are $20 for general admission, $18 for students, seniors and active military, and $10 for children 12 and under.
