Scripps Ranch Theatre To Present
"Painting Churches"
1984 Pulitzer Prize Finalist and Best Off-Broadway Play,
January 15 - February 12, 2011
Scripps Ranch Theatre will present “Painting Churches,” a warm, touching play about parental love and its changing nature, Jan, 15-Feb, 12, 2011. The play will be performed at its theatre on the Alliant International University campus.
“Painting Churches” was a Pulitzer Prize for Drama finalist in 1984 and was selected Best Off-Broadway Play by the New York Outer Critics Circle. The show also won a Best Actress award for Marian Seldes, the legendary New York actress.
Written by Tina Howe, “Painting Churches” is play about a talented artist who returns to her New England roots after an absence of many years in order to paint a portrait of her aging, eccentric parents. The warm, touching and often bittersweet drama is a dramatic portrait of the inner-workings of a loving and talented family.
Directed by Robert May, the cast includes DeNae Steele, Jill Drexler and Charles Riendeau. May last directed Scripps Ranch Theatre’s hit show, “I’m Not Rappaport.” Steele was last seen in Scripps Ranch Theater’s hit, “Not Now, Darling” and was previously seen in “The Last Night of Ballyhoo.” Drexler, in addition to being SRT’s artistic director, is an award-winning actor who was featured most recently in “Not Now, Darling.” She has appeared in numerous theaters around San Diego including: North Coast Repertory, Diversionary, Moonlight at the Avo, Backyard and Renaissance at Cygnet, Sledgehanmer, and 6th @ Penn. Riendeau recently directed “Social Security” at SRT and appeared in “I’m Not Rappaport.” He directed “All This and Moonlight” at SRT last season.”
Critical response to the show was overwhelming:
"Beautifully written...A theatrical family portrait that has the shimmer and depth of Renoir portraits." N.Y. Times
"A radiant, loving and zestfully humorous play...distinctly Chekovian. Howe captures the same edgy surface of false hilarity, the sane unutterable sadness beneath it, and the indomitable valor beneath both." Time
“Resonant drama, poignant revelations and hearty, life-inspired laughs in a captivating collage of clashing emotional needs.” Washington Post.
