Scripps Ranch Theatre Presents

"Social Security"

A Sophisticated Comedy, To Open
Scripps Ranch Theatre’s 32nd Season Sept. 11 - Oct. 9

Social Security, a sophisticated, wildly hilarious comedy, will be the first offering in Scripps Ranch Theatre’s 32nd season when it opens Sept. 11 and runs through Oct. 9. A hit on Broadway, this comedy was written by Andrew Bergman, regarded at the time as one of the funniest playwrights in the world.

The play, directed originally by Mike Nichols, opened at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in 1986 for its Broadway run. Since then, it has proved popular with regional audiences throughout the U.S.

The SRT production is directed by Charles Riendeau and produced by Martin Astl. The cast includes Susan Andrews, Trina Kaplan, Charles Peters, Jonathan Sachs, George Soete and Sherryl Wynne.

The plot: Social Security focuses on trendy Manhattan art gallery owners Barbara and David Kahn, whose chic and sophisticated life is turned upside down when her housewife sister deposits their eccentric mother on the couple’s doorstep while she and her husband head to Buffalo to rescue their sexually precocious daughter from a ménage a trios. The comic sparks fully ignite when Barbara and David introduce her mother to a nonagenarian artist who offers to paint her portrait and to brighten her life in ways she never expected in her twilight years.

When the play opened, the New York Post wrote, "Just when you were beginning to think you were never going to laugh again on Broadway, along comes Social Security and you realize that it is once more safe to giggle in the streets.”

Director Riendeau said, “Go ahead, laugh. We won’t tell anyone. The play is a hoot, and yet informs those parts of our lives that deal with aging parents and their sometimes unpredictable turns. I am delighted to be a part of bringing this heartwarming offering to SRTs patrons."

There is a special preview for Social Security Friday, Sept. 10, that starts at 8 p.m. Tickets for this preview are $10. Regular performances begin with opening night on Saturday, Sept. 11 and are offered Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. There is an additional matinee at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9.

Tickets are $22 general admission and $20 for students, seniors and active military. Scripps Ranch Theatre encourages patrons to make reservations early as performances sell out quickly.
