Scripps Ranch Theatre Presents
You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown
Tony Award-Winning Musical
Opens Nov. 12 at Scripps Ranch Theatre
“You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” the Tony Award-winning musical about a day in the life of Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang, will open Nov. 12 at Scripps Ranch Theatre and run through Dec. 17. The theater is located on the Alliant International University campus at 10455 Pomerado Road.
The first version of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” opened on Broadway in 1967 and was an immediate hit. A subsequent revival in 1999 netted four Tony nominations and two awards, one for Roger Bart, who played the role of Snoopy, and one for Kristen Chenoweth, who achieved a break-through performance as Sally.
"Although the show is about children, I would call it a family show, not a children's show," said SRT Artistic Director Jill Drexler. "It has many human themes with which everyone can identify. The musical is a series of songs and scenes that celebrate a day in the life of Charlie Brown, everyone’s favorite blockhead, and the rest of the Peanuts gang. It’s a show that has gained widespread popularity among adults and children alike."
Joey Landwehr, artistic director for J*Company Youth Theatre, will make his directorial debut at Scripps Ranch Theatre. Landwehr moved to San Diego after being a professional actor and director in New York City working on and off Broadway, national tours, regional theatre and directing and soloing at Carnegie Hall.
“You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” boasts a talented and experienced musical cast that includes Caleb Goh as Charlie Brown, Michelle Tymich as Lucy van Pelt, Matthew Starkey as Linus van Pelt, Hannah M. James as Sally Brown, Riley Faison as Schroeder, and Rebecca Lauren Myers as Snoopy.
Generally regarded as a bright and happy musical, we laugh even when Charlie Brown endures another humiliation. Playwright, composer, and lyricist Clark M. Gesner takes advantage of Charles M. Schulz’s genius at compressing a hilarious, touching, and perceptive story into the four brief panels of a strip. Much of the show’s dialogue is lifted directly from these strips and turned into sharp scenes.
“You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” conveys a very American sense that things can be changed, modified or resolved with a little imagination and by getting good and mad, said director Landwher. “But at the same time, Charlie Brown reminds people, as no other character has, of what it is to be vulnerable, to be human. This is the perfect family musical for every one of every age, especially during this wonderful holiday season.”
Shane Simmons is musical director and Martin Astl is production manager. For further information about the show or the theatre, check out the SRT website at www.scrippsranchtheatre.org
