PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM - a comedy by Woody Allen.
Our homely hero has this thing about Humphrey Bogart. If only he had some of Bogart's technique. Homely heroes being in scarce supply, Bogart comes to the rescue with a fantastic bevy of beauties. His friends try to fix him up with dates but they always end up abysmally, even though Bogart is there urging him on. Fact is, he's more like a friendly dog than a hero; and this is what charms his best friend's wife, to the point that they spend a night together.
Now our hero is in a real mess. But in the white light of day homeliness will not be hid and he is let off the hook. It's a tough life, making it in the world of beautiful people when you yourself are homely, but it's grand fun to follow.
"hilarious ... a cheerful romp." "Not only are Mr. Allen's jokes audaciously
brilliant, but he has a great sense of character."
"A funny, likeable comedy that has a surprising amount of wistful appeal."
PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM starts September 7, 2007 and runs through October 6, 2007.
THE O'CONNOR GIRLS – a drama by Kate Forgette.
The O'Connor story takes place in 1997 in Minnesota over the Christmas holiday. Tom O'Connor has passed away and his wife and children have reunited to excavate his mountain of personal effects.
As the family sifts through the boxes, clues to the quiet patriarch's life are discovered, prompting the usual heated arguments and some unusual revelations. As the story of Tom and Sarah's marriage unfolds, the children are forced to reconsider their long-held opinions of their parents. In the midst of this emotional afternoon a long-lost neighbor pays an unexpected visit. Also on the agenda for this day of upheaval are Catholicism, WWII, old movies, old love, new love, oversleeping, overdrinking, large purple hats, and weenie hot dishes.
"Comfy, affable, and amusing piece, it's a warmhearted outing by a writer who clearly feels affection for this clan." "An affecting, amusing evening out...positively radiant with small town sweetness... We're into these people and want to keep hearing them yearn and reminisce." "Forgette is a promising writer with an ear, a heart, a forgiving wit, and a feel for family dynamics."
THE O'CONNOR GIRLS starts November 16, 2007 and runs through December 15, 2007.
AS BEES IN HONEY DROWN – a Comedy/Drama by Douglas Carter Beane.
Evan Wyler has just finished a photo session with his shirt off. No, he's not a supermodel; he's a twenty something New York writer savoring the success of his debut novel. Defined by the media as the "hot young" thing of the moment, Evan captures the attention of Alexa Vere de Vere, a black clad woman of mystery who has made the world of celebrity her home. Maybe she's a record producer, maybe she's a film agent. What is clear is that she wants Evan to write the screenplay of her life story.
To Evan, who is gay, it's like an invitation into the world of Auntie Mame, Sally Bowles, and Holly Golightly all rolled into one. But once Evan fools himself into believing he loves Alex, she vanishes, leaving him to foot the bill for all the dinners and Armani suits. Trying to find Alexa, Evan discovers a chain of people who have fallen under her spell and acted as her meal ticket. For Alexa has no money, no job, no life of her own. As Alexa puts it: " You're not the person you were born - who wonderful is?"
"A delicious soufflé of a satire, an extremely entertaining fable for any age
that chooses image over substance."
"A witty assessment of one of the most active and relentless
industries in a consumer society."
AS BEES IN HONEY DROWN starts February 15, 2008 and runs through March 15, 2008.
